Creating the publications for UOC’s production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

This is a particularly exciting project to work with, not just because of the photographic production but myself taking part in the actual stage show as a rhythm guitarist. Guitar being a secondary interest of mine this is perfect experience for anyone who plays an instrument.

The images for this production are what I am most pleased with. This time I was given free range to explore different possibilities. I was keen to replicate a technique I had used before for headshots, this was using a soft box to cover the right side of the face and having a flood to shine on the black backdrop. This is a very simple but effective layout to have in an indoor studio, the only problem I faced was keeping the very large soft box from dragging the lighting rig to the ground, which was suspended from the ceiling.

The effect turns into something I am very fond of, a dynamic looking portrait that is also very dark and natural, for showing strong characters this is the way I will always gravitate towards.

The end result for the poster will be the two members of the cast in full costume and their headshots cut in half down the middle and placed together. This is not a copy of a previously made cover of poster for the full production show, but an original idea from the UOC cast. This is what I like to see in these productions, originality over carbon copies of the blockbuster shows. Because at the end of the day the cast and space is different so the publication should have its own twist as well.
