As stated in a previous post about creating the poster of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the idea was to combine the headshots of both actors to combine one silhouette referencing the song in the musical ‘Origin of Love’ which talks about a Greek story of soulmates joined back to back. This idea came from the director who then trusted me to create this vision, which turned out to be more difficult than imagined. The combined images did not match up due to proportions being different. To rectify this I Used various warp tools in Photoshop to match the faces up.
When the posters had first been put up I received comments saying how similar the two actors looked, people had not realised it was Photoshoped, which I would take as the illusion working. However when taking the images I was unaware of the amount of text needed to be put onto the poster. This meant I had to make very good use of the little negative space I had left myself in the images, creating a poster that does look crammed.
No comments of this nature came to surface so I’m counting this as personal preference.
The main title text was heavily influenced by the Broadway publications. I wanted to create something relatable to people who were already familiar with the professional production. Again this was well received. This is not the first poster for a UOC production I have created, a year ago I worked with the cast of Peer Gynt, however this poster was created with graphics rather than photography, so spacing was much easier to manage, as well as freedom with text styles. As I found with Hedwig there was little font styles that complimented the photograph. I ended up choosing Dejavu Sans which I modified by changing the spacing of the characters.
